Jamie Donaldson had the Peugeot van in his sights but the Prius was slowing and he didn’t want to attract attention by overtaking so he had no choice other than to turn back. The Prius indicated a left turn.

‘Foxtrot One, Victor One is turning left, left, left,’ he said over the radio.

‘I saw that,’ said Walsh. ‘Stick with Victor Two.’

Donaldson accelerated and got closer to the van. There was no tracker on it and he didn’t want to risk losing it.

The van stopped at a set of red traffic lights and Donaldson pulled up behind it. Following one on one was never a good idea, it was all too easy to be spotted.

‘Foxtrot One, any chance of some support?’ he asked over the radio. ‘We’re stopped at lights and if he checks his rear-view mirror he’ll be looking right at me.’

‘I’m working on it,’ said Walsh.

‘A couple of bikes would be nice,’ said Donaldson.

‘It’s on my wish list.’

The lights changed and the van moved off. Donaldson followed. They were heading south on Wakefield Road now. They crossed an interchange and Wakefield Road became Tong Street which then curved to the east. Donaldson wasn’t too familiar with the geography of Bradford but he knew that they were heading towards Bradford Prison. After a few minutes he saw the brick turrets of the prison in the distance. Donaldson frowned. Was it a coincidence? He wrinkled his nose. Two decades of surveillance work had proved to him that genuine coincidences were few and far between. He called upon Walsh on the radio.

‘Foxtrot Three, I think they’re heading to the prison.’

‘Are you sure, Foxtrot Three?’

‘I’m not sure, but we’re on Tong Street heading east and the prison is in that direction.’

‘Victor One is parked outside Tango Two’s house,’ said Walsh. ‘We backed the right horse. But I need to know where that horse is going. Tong Street also leads to the M62 and that’s one of the busiest roads in the country.’

‘But if they are headed for the prison, what does that mean?’ said Donaldson. ‘You can’t just drive into a Cat B prison, can you?’ Realisation dawned and he sighed. ‘What if they deliver to the prison? Is that possible?’

‘I’ll check,’ said Walsh.

‘We’re only minutes away,’ said Donaldson.

‘Roger that.’

The van indicated left, taking them off the main road and away from the main entrance to the prison. ‘Foxtrot Three, Victor Two is left, left, left off Tong Street.’ That meant the van wasn’t heading for the M62. Donaldson frowned. He knew it was a rookie mistake to make assumptions about where a target was going, but it was becoming increasingly likely that Bradford Prison was Victor Two’s destination. But if that was the case, why were they driving away from the entrance?

Donaldson’s question was answered when the van drove up to a large metal gate set into the razor-wire-topped wall. There was a sign that said ‘HMP Bradford’ and another that said ‘DELIVERIES ONLY’.

The area around the gate was covered by two large CCTV cameras.
